Romans 1:30g

Read Introduction to Romans

30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

disobedient [unwilling to be persuaded] to parents,

This sin rejects the authority of those who have done the most for them. There is a lack of gratitude in this sin.

PRINCIPLE: Children need to learn from their parents that other people have rights.

APPLICATION: Rejection of authority by children is rampant in our day. The Ten Commandments say, “Honor your father and mother” (Ex 20:12). The reason children need to learn to obey their parents is to learn that other people have rights; they need to respect those rights. Obedience is yielding one’s will to authority.

Ep 6: 2 Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise . . .

2 Ti 3: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

inventors of evil things,

These people have an ingenuity in inventing wrong. They go beyond the normal trails of evil. They want to launch out toward new evils because old evils became boring.

PRINCIPLE: Some people become bored with old sin so they seek new thrills in sinning.

APPLICATION: Ultimate creativity belongs to God alone. Inventors of evil things seek to usurp God’s creativity, but they do it with the purpose of inventing new forms of evil. The old evil becomes boring. They are discontent with the old ways of sinning. Sin grows old. These men grow tired of illicit sex with women, so they try homosexuality.

boasters,

The proud person is a boastful person. Literally, this word means one who wanders about. It was used of the person who boasts of cures. It is a person who pretends to be what he is not.

PRINCIPLE: Some people sin by a swagger attitude of contempt of others.

APPLICATION: Boasters brag about themselves. They are out to impress others by putting on airs of importance. This insults others around them. Boasting roots its haughtiness in pride. It seeks admiration of something not possessed. This type of person believes that he is more knowledgeable or more courageous than others. An empty wagon rattles. This person has a great deal of stock in the window but very little in the store.

Is 10: 8 For he says, “Are not my princes altogether kings? 9 Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? 10 As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, Whose carved images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria, 11 As I have done to Samaria and her idols, Shall I not do also to Jerusalem and her idols?”

14: 13 For you have said in your heart: “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.”

proud,

The Greek for “proud” is to appear above others. The “proud” are arrogant people. They have a sense of self-sufficiency and lift themselves over others. Scripture uses this word in three passages:

Ja 4: 6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”

1 Pe 5: 5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”

Pr 3: 34 Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.

PRINCIPLE: Some people have the sin of being “stuck up.”

APPLICATION: Many people have a sense of personal superiority over others. It is a belligerent attitude. This person regards himself superior to others. This is the opposite attitude to humility.

violent,

The meaning of “violent” is insolent. We get the English word “hubris” from this Greek word. However, this is a certain type of pride. This is a person with a lofty sense of superiority over others. He treats others as below him. He insults them.

This form of pride is not aware of its limitations. It gives the idea of arrogance. “Violent” carries two ideas of cruelty and pride. A violent person treats others with contempt because he believes that he, and he alone, amounts to anything.

PRINCIPLE: Superiority is a contemptuous sin.

APPLICATION: Some people have contempt for everyone except themselves. They have a high opinion of themselves and a very low opinion of others. It is a sense of superiority.

haters of God,

God-haters are people hateful to God. The Greek word appears only here in the New Testament.

PRINCIPLE: Men hate God because they know they violate ultimate authority.

APPLICATION: Most people today do not hate God but rather tolerate Him. However, negative orientation to God comes from a corrupt mind.

Ro 8: 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

“backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,”

The following 12 sins (beginning with the whispering of the previous verse) change construction in the Greek (to substantives and adjectives), giving vividness to those who reject God’s revelation.
backbiters,
Backbiters are slanderers. Literally the word means to talk back. They spread lies about other people far and wide. Slander takes gossip a step further; it takes it to the public openly.
PRINCIPLE: What whisperers do in secret, slanderers do in the open.
APPLICATION: Some people love to stab others in the back. They love to smear the reputation of others. They trumpet as much trash as possible in order to detract from others.
It’s been said, “Two things are bad for the heart: running up stairs and running down people.”

Romans 1:29k

Read Introduction to Romans

29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers,

they are whisperers,

“Whisperers” are gossips. These are people who love to slander both in a secret sense and in an open sense. These people collect lies and distortions about others. Their primary method is to secretly slander others.

PRINCIPLE: Slanderous gossip hurts others; it is the revenge of the coward.

APPLICATION: Some people vilify others. They love to hurt the reputation of others. There are many warnings in the Word of God about this. Talebearers and rumormongers spread their mean ideas without regard for others.

People can defend themselves against open slander, but secret whispering is much more difficult to defend.

As the proverb goes, he who blackens others does not whiten himself.

evil-mindedness;

“Evil-mindedness” is maliciousness or bad character. These people operate with spite. This word is a combination of two words: evil (pernicious) and ethos (habit, custom). We get our English word “cacophony” from this Greek word. Cacophony is discordant sound. Putting the two words together, we get the idea of habitual evil, customary evil. An evil-minded person customarily seeks to harm other people.

This word for malice (different in the Greek than the word used previously in the same verse) occurs only here in the New Testament. This is a person who puts the worst slant on everything, who believes the worst about others.

PRINCIPLE: Evil-mindedness believes the worst about people.

APPLICATION: Evil-minded people suppose the worst about others. It is their nature to operate with evil intent. Their interpretation of fact is with malicious intent even concerning completely innocent actions.

deceit,

The word “deceit” was used for bait for fish; thus, it carries the idea of deceiving the fish with a lure. Desire in this context is to bait or deceive people. There is little that is straightforward about deceitful people.

The Greek word was used for watering down wine and corrupting precious metals such as gold.

PRINCIPLE: Deceit is the cunning or treacherous aspect of man.

APPLICATION: Fallen man loves to use words as treachery whereby they snare the unsuspecting. This is done for personal gain. They cunningly deal with others. This is the opposite of Nathaniel, in whom was no guile. A deceitful person cannot act straightforwardly but is devious and underhanded. He operates with intrigue and ulterior motive.

Jn 1: 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”

There are always people who will stoop to any means to reach their ends. They will use underhanded and devious methods to get their own way. These people are double-dealers. “O, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!”

1 Pe 2: 22 “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”;
