Read Introduction to Colossians

“But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.”

“filthy language”

We come to the fifth garment we are to put off like a dirty garment. God demands that our lips be a credit to Christ. He does not want us to bring reproach to His name. Respect for others is a reasonable expectation on God’s part. God made an enormous investment in us by giving his Son on the cross. He also gave us the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God among other spiritual prerogatives. With all these spiritual assets, He has a right to expect more of us than we give Him.

Principle:

Filthy language is foul talk, including crude and coarse language.

Application:

Many Christians revert to filthy language when frustrated. They become obscene because they do not handle their problems biblically. Other Christians shame and hurt others by their mouth because of their inability to cope with life biblically.
