Read Introduction to 2 Peter

“…having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children.”

enticing unstable souls.

The deception of the false teachers sought to allure others into their system of sexual perversion. The word “enticing” originally meant to catch by using bait. The term “enticing” carries the idea of luring or enticing. False teachers lead people astray because what they said sounded so feasible.

False teachers look for “unstable” people. They look for the naïve and gullible. Some people will swallow anything. Apostates get their victims from untaught or poorly taught Christians. They are susceptible to error. Religion often appeals to them more than truth.

Eph 4:14, “…that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting…”

Jas 1:6-8, “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

PRINCIPLE:

Stability comes through knowing God’s Word.

APPLICATION:

Do you blow spiritually hot and then blow cold? You are enthusiastic about God’s will one week and live in defeat the following week. If you are this way, you are an excellent candidate for false teaching. They look for people like you.

Religious con men will take you into their confidence. By this, they sell you a bill of goods. They never reveal everything they believe. They make it sound like they are evangelical in belief. You do not discover their views until you buy into their scheme. Shallow types will be swept away by the superficial.

Some people are swept into false doctrine because they were hurt in the church. They are unhappy with the leadership or with what someone said about them. Someone will meet them and appeal to their hurts. These people are prime targets for entering into error.

False teachers constantly peddle diabolical propaganda on every hand. Their propaganda sounds so feasible. People buy into appearance hook, line, and sinker. The only way to gain stability in the soul is to establish ourselves in the Word of God.
