Read Introduction to 1 Thessalonians

…that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you…“

and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you

Idle people meddle in other people’s affairs.  This causes problems in the local church.  Idleness creates gossips.  This is one reason for employment.  People effectively employed are no burden to others.  They do not take advantage of the charity of others.

“But let none of you suffer… as a busybody in other men’s matters” (1 Peter 4:15).

PRINCIPLE:

God dignifies employment.

APPLICATION:

Honest work keeps us from meddling in the affairs of others.  Christians should work to gain the respect of others.  This is a testimony to Christ.  We can glorify God with our employment.
