Read Introduction to 1 Corinthians

“So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.”

So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters,

The process of church growth is like agriculture – plant and water. Neither as a sole entity makes the plant grow – both planting and watering are required for ministry growth. Yet, all the human contribution in the world is still not sufficient for the plant to grow; it needs God’s sovereign intervention.

but God who gives the increase.

Both planting and watering require God’s efficiency. The essence of life is beyond the power of man. God alone causes “the increase.” The word “increase” means growth, enlargement, amplification. We plan ministry, but God prospers ministry. Our plans are nothing if they are not supported by divine intervention.

PRINCIPLE:

All production in ministry involves the grace of God.

APPLICATION:

God does not depend on human talent for His ministry. He provides everything needed for ministry. There is no reason for feeling sorry for ourselves because of all that we have to do in ministry. All production in ministry involves the grace of God. We can depend on that.
