Read Introduction to 1 Corinthians

But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

But if anyone seems to be contentious,

Evidently, the issue of longer hair was a contentious issue in the church at Corinth. Some women rebelled against their God-appointed roles. The word “contentious” means fond of strife. Some people love to fight over these things. There is no place for “hair-splitters” in the church!

we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

God does not allow any “custom” (practice) of contention that blurs the distinction between masculinity and femininity.

PRINCIPLE:

There are some doctrines worth fighting over, but some are not.

APPLICATION:

It is not proper for churches to allow contention over the roles of men and women in the church. Biblical inerrancy, the deity of Christ, and other strategic doctrines are worth fighting over.
