”..raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.”
This verse continues the description of apostates by elements of nature.
raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame;
The fifth description is that apostates are like “raging waves of the sea.” Jude pictures apostates as “raging waves” (wild waves). False teaches are unstable.
False teachers are like waves that foam up and quickly disappear. Their shame is in what they believe. They carry shame because their teaching does not contain the truth.
wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
The sixth description is that apostates are like stars without orbit or direction. Seamen use stars to fix their position in navigation. Christians who fix their doctrinal navigation on false teachers will lose their orientation to the “blackness of darkness.” Their doctrine flashes across the sky for a moment and then disappears.
Notice that word “forever.” False teachers will spend eternity in hell.
PRINCIPLE:
False teachers will spend eternity in hell, and no true believer will go to hell.
APPLICATION:
The Bible teaches eternal judgment in outer darkness for false teachers. Jesus taught more about hell than any other person in the Bible.
And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ Mt 25:30
Then He will also say to those on the left hand, “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels…” Mt 25:41
And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. Mt 25:46
…and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power… 2 Th 1:7-9
The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Re 20:10
Christians will never face eternal death.
Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Ro 5:9-10
For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ… 1 Th 5:9
I am wondering if verse 13 refers to, or confirms, varying degrees of suffering in hell, as well as 2 Peter 2:17, which both refer to “the blackest darkness”. I understand that hell is a place of eternal suffering and torment, but if these two passages are not referring to varying degrees of suffering, what scriptures support that? This is a question I have been asked so am doing some research. Thanks for your help.
Debbie, this passage seems to indicate degrees in hell: https://versebyversecommentary.com/1999/01/30/revelation-2013-14/
