Read Introduction to Matthew
18While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples. 20And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. 21For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour. 23When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26And the report of this went out into all that land.
This section describes two miraculous healings (9:18-26).
9:18
While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying,
Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue in Capernaum, came with an appeal for Jesus to heal his twelve-year-old daughter. He “worshiped” Jesus.
“My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.”
The ruler believed that Jesus could raise his dead daughter.
9:19
So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.
Jesus honored the ruler’s faith by going to his house with His disciples.
9:20
And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment.
While Jesus was on his way to the ruler’s house, He faced an interruption by a woman who had been hemorrhaging blood for twelve years. She tried many physicians but none could heal her.
9:21
For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.”
This woman’s faith was such that she did not need to talk to Jesus but only “touch His garment.”
9:22
But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.”
Jesus honored this woman’s faith by healing her.
And the woman was made well from that hour.
After twelve years of sickness, this woman was immediately healed.
9:23
When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing,
Arriving at the ruler’s house, Jesus encountered the normal scene of mourning with people wailing and flute playing. These people were trained mourners.
9:24
He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.”
Jesus anticipated healing the girl. She did not die to stay dead.
And they ridiculed Him.
The crowd made fun of Jesus.
9:25
But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
Jesus miraculously healed the girl.
9:26
And the report of this went out into all that land.
Rumor of the miracle spread throughout northern Palestine.
