Read Introduction to Matthew

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.

Soldiers mocked Jesus in preparation for His crucifixion in 27:27-31.

27:27

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him.

Soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium (Pilate’s residence while in Jerusalem) at Fort Antonia (northwest of the temple) to make sport of Him.

27:28

And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.

Because Jesus claimed to be the King of the Jews, soldiers paid mock homage to Him. They put a military uniform on His bleeding body.

27:29

When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

Again in mockery, they put a crown of thorns on His head. They also put a reed in his hand portraying a royal scepter. It was a humiliating affair; Jesus stood there like a clown. The soldiers further mocked Him by kneeling before Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews.” There may have been anti-Semitism in this.

27:30

Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.

They took the fake scepter and hit Him on the head with it while spitting on Him.

Is 50: 6 I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

27:31

And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.

They led Jesus away to be crucified, a shameful and painful death. This event was the climax of God’s purpose of salvation. On the cross Jesus paid for the sins of every person who lived or ever will live.

PRINCIPLE:

Jesus took the curse for our sins.

APPLICATION:

Jesus went through a cruel ordeal because He was determined to die for our sins. Have you come to the place where you rest in Christ’s death for your sins? That is the critical and sole qualification for eternal life.

John 5:24 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”
