Read Introduction to Romans

12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”

The fifth indictment against mankind is that man is useless to God.

They have together become unprofitable [useless, unserviceable];

As a group (“together”) all men end in useless pursuits. They apprehend barren lives without God. The Hebrew word for “unprofitable” means bad, become sour like milk. They are spiritually sour. Their spirituality turns rancid and their chosen way of salvation is the wrong road. Rebellious man is unprofitable to God.

Life without God is putrid.

From God’s viewpoint, the non-Christian life is a wasted life. Many Christians serve without any benefit to the Lord. Operating under the power of the Spirit in accordance with the Word of God will deliver us from a wasted life before the Lord. Many believers are unfit for use by God. Apart from God we are of no ultimate use in God’s kingdom.

Jn 6:63, It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
