Read Introduction to Titus

2 in [on] hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,

which God, who cannot lie,

Cretans were notorious liars, but God can never go back on His word. This is why we can have confidence in our hope. God keeps His promises. We can trust Him for that. God is a truthful person. God’s promises rest on His character. This establishes the absolute certainty of this hope, because God bases this hope on His promises.

PRINCIPLE:

We can lay claim to God’s promises because He does not have the capacity to lie.

APPLICATION:

Christians can trust God’s promises because of His character. He can never go back on His Word. This gives us confidence about our eternal future.

Nu 23: 19 “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

Ro 3: 3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? 4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: “That You may be justified in Your words, And may overcome when You are judged.”

2 Ti 2: 13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.

He 6: 18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
