Read Introduction to Titus

7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,

not violent [pugnacious],

The word “violent” means striker. A Christian leader would never get in a fist-fight with someone, other than to defend himself. The metaphorical idea is being a disposition to use force to get one’s way.

PRINCIPLE:

Fist-fighting is unbecoming to a leader.

APPLICATION:

Fist-fighting is both unnecessary and unbecoming to the position of Christian leadership. Yet we know that words often strike harder than fists. A Christian leader does not need to use force to get his way. He is to use leadership qualities to move his congregation.
