2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise:



To substantiate the previous verse that children are to obey their parents, Paul quoted the fifth commandment (Ex 20:12; De 5:16).

2 “Honor your father and mother,”

The second responsibility that a child has to his parents is to “honor” them; that is, hold them as valuable and precious. To honor parents is to hold them in high regard. Parents hold a fixed value in God’s viewpoint.

which is the first [primary] commandment with promise:

Honoring father and mother is the first or primary commandment with promise for children, not simply the first commandment with promise (Ex 20:6).

PRINCIPLE:

Parents hold a fixed value in God’s eyes.

APPLICATION:

If a child respects his parents, there is a likelihood that he will respect other people as well. Respect for others is foundational for sound relationships in society.
