Read Introduction to John

27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

27 And you also will bear witness [testify],

The apostles would testify to who and what Jesus did for the world after His resurrection and ascension to the Father. Both the Holy Spirit and the apostles would witness to the authenticity of Jesus.

The word “also” shows that Jesus linked the apostles closely to the ministry of the Spirit (Ac 4:33). The Bible never bifurcates the ministry of people from the ministry of the Spirit.

because you have been with Me from the beginning.

The apostles were appointed to Jesus’ mission on earth from the start. They had the unique testimony of having been with Him from the beginning of His public ministry. They would now go on to establish the church.

PRINCIPLE:

The greater the privilege, the greater the responsibility.

APPLICATION:

Witnessing for Christ is a two-pronged affair—the testimony of the individual and the convicting work of the Holy Spirit. This is both a great privilege and responsibility. God uses both the human testimony and divine intervention to expose people to the gospel (Ac 1:8). One without the other is not in God’s plan for reaching the world.
