After Jesus made provision for His mother’s future, He then turned to His own need.

The time had come for Jesus to finish His purpose on earth.
that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
This event of physical anguish alludes to the messianic passage of Psalm 69:21. This is the fifth statement by Jesus from the cross. John did not record the fourth statement (Mt 27:46; Mk 15:34).

Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there;
“Sour wine” was cheap wine. This is not the same event as the offer of wine mixed with gall on the way to the cross (Mt 27:34).
and they filled a sponge with sour wine,
This sentence fulfilled Psalm 69:21.
put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
The Jews used hyssop to smear Passover blood on their doorposts. Hyssop was a plant used for ceremonial cleansing in the Old Testament (Ex 12:22).
PRINCIPLE:
Although Jesus was deprived of water on the cross, He offered the water of eternal life.
APPLICATION:
It is ironic that Jesus, who was the Water of Life, was thirsty on the cross (Jn 4:14; 7:38-39).
