Read Introduction to John

9 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

20:9

For as yet they did not know the Scripture,

The “Scripture” here may be Psalm 16:10 and Isaiah 53:10. John and Peter did not understand these Bible verses yet. “As yet” indicates that they ultimately understood what Scripture said about the resurrection.

that He must rise again from the dead.

They believed in the resurrection of Christ before they understood that the Scriptures prophesied it. The facts of the case demanded that they believe it.

20:10

Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Knowing that Jesus was nowhere to be found, the disciples went home. Later Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb, where Jesus appeared to her first.

PRINCIPLE:

The resurrection of Christ had eyewitness testimony.

APPLICATION:

The evidence of Jesus’ resurrection was so strong that His disciples risked life and limb for Him. Some were later martyred. The evidence of the graveclothes was there.

Many people read the Bible but have not come to grips with its meaning, principles, and applications. Sometimes it takes a crisis for us to take the Word of God seriously.
