Read Introduction to John

4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

21:4

But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

It was so early in the morning that the disciples did not recognize Jesus standing on the shore.

21:5

Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

The word “children” means little children or lads. This term probably carries the idea in our day of “friends.”

Jesus asked them if they had caught any food. The Greek indicates that Jesus expected them not to have any food at this point.

They answered Him, “No.”

Jesus required the disciples to recognize their need before He supplied it for them. They were professional fishermen, yet they failed to catch fish.

21:6

And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.”

Jesus gave the disciples specific knowledge of where they could trawl for fish.

So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

The disciples hauled in a huge amount of fish. This was not a miracle so much as a supernatural act by Jesus.

PRINCIPLE:

God provides for His own in abundance.

APPLICATION:

Our Lord is sovereign of the sea. He knows where the provisions are located there. He is also willing to share those resources with those who follow Him.
