Read Introduction to Hebrews

3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

when He had by Himself purged our sins,

The sixth declaration about the Son’s superiority is that He purged or cleansed us from our sins. He purged our sins by His death on the cross in history. It is our sins that Jesus cleansed (He 9:26). Sin is what violates God. It is something unclean from God’s viewpoint. Jesus brought the sin issue to an ultimate conclusion; He completely cleanses sinners from sin by washing them with His blood. Sin threw things out of God’s order; Jesus put them back in order.

PRINCIPLE:

The Son redeemed all who would believe on Him.

APPLICATION:

Jesus’ death on the cross personally paid the penalty for our sins. No one else could do that for us. Not only does He deal with cosmic realities, but He relates to us personally. We do not have to pay for our sins because He personally took the punishment for them. He took my hell that I might have His heaven. This is unadulterated grace. He did something for us that we did not and do not deserve.
