Read Introduction to Zechariah

6 In that day I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves; they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem. 7 “The Lord will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah.

Verses 6 and 7 give the Messiah’s response to Israel’s faith.

12:6

In that day

This phrase reemphasizes “that day” of verse 4, a prophetic day of the future.

I will make the governors of Judah like a firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in the sheaves;

The “firepan in the woodpile” here carries the thought of a cooking vessel filled with burning coals that surround a woodpile.

they shall devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left,

The “firepan” pictures Gentile kings burning by God’s judgment through the “governors of Judah.”

but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place—Jerusalem.

Although under attack from the nation’s enemies, the government will remain stable.

12:7

“The Lord will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not become greater than that of Judah.

“The tents of Judah” is a metaphor for villages that surround Jerusalem. God will deliver Judah’s villages first because of her dependence on Jehovah.

The “glory” of the house of David is that he was the foremost warrior in Israel’s history. The Messiah will manifest Himself in such a way as to be Israel’s glory in defeating her enemies.

PRINCIPLE:

Believers can rest in the God-given victory.

APPLICATION:

Nations without God will recognize that people who trust God will prevail. There are times when God gives supernational victory to believers.

God, Himself, will defeat Israel’s enemies in the future and give them power to deal with her enemies. This event will occur toward the end of the Tribulation and at the Second Coming.
