4 And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south. 5 Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake In the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Thus the Lord my God will come, And all the saints with You.
Verses 4 and 5 describe the events of the Messiah’s presence in Jerusalem after His victory over the Gentile nations of the world.
14:4
And in that day His [the Messiah’s] feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
The Mount of Olives is situated to the east of Jerusalem, 230 feet higher than the city. The Messiah first came to the Mount of Olives during His interactions on earth. He ascended from this Mount after His resurrection (Acts 1:11-12). He will return to the Mount with His resurrected and glorified body. The advent of the Messiah is also described as “that day” (words that occur 17 times in the second oracle), including both the Great Tribulation and Second Advent.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south.
The Mount of Olives will split in two from east to west, creating a great valley to the east of Jerusalem. God will provide a way of escape for the nation Israel.
14:5
Then you [inhabitants of Jerusalem] shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal.
By splitting the Mount of Olives, the newly created valley will extend to Azal, an unknown location. God will make a supernatural way of escape for the Jews. God’s remnant will escape through this valley from the invading armies against Jerusalem.
Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake In the days of Uzziah king of Judah.
Uzziah was a good king, blessed by Jehovah, who reigned 792-742 BC (1 Kgs 15:3). There was an earthquake in the time of Uzziah (Amos 1:1). God will make a way for Israel’s flight from the world’s nations. They will flee precipitously, very much as people fled from the earthquake in the time of King Uzziah.
Thus the Lord my God will come, And all the saints with You.
When the Messiah comes, “all the saints” (holy ones) will accompany Him (1 Th 3:13). Holy ones might also include angels.
PRINCIPLE:
The Second Coming of Christ is an age-altering event.
APPLICATION:
God’s glory departed from a mount east of Jerusalem during Ezekiel’s vision (Ezek 11:23). When the Messiah returns to the Mount of Olives, His glory will return to earth (Rev 19:11). He will plant His feet literally on the Mount and split the Mount in two, creating a valley. Saints and angels as a retinue will join the Messiah when He returns (Mt 25:31; 2 Th 1:10; 3:13; Jude 1:14). The Second Advent of Christ will be an age-altering event.
