Read Introduction to Zechariah

6 It shall come to pass in that day That there will be no light; The lights will diminish. 7 It shall be one day Which is known to the Lord Neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen That it will be light. 8 And in that day it shall be— That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea; In both summer and winter it shall occur. 9 And the Lord shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be “The Lord is one,” And His name one. 10 All the land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be raised up and inhabited in her place from Benjamin’s Gate to the place of the First Gate and the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. 11 The people shall dwell in it; And no longer shall there be utter destruction, But Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited

The argument of 14:6-11 is that “the LORD shall be King over all the earth.” People will receive Him as “one,” proclaiming, “The LORD is one.” Verses 6-8 show physical changes to the earth during the Millennial kingdom (Mt 24:29, 30). The reign of the Messiah will be epic making. The following verses show how the Messiah will cataclysmically establish His kingdom over Israel.

14:6-7

6It shall come to pass in that day That there will be no light; The lights will diminish. 7 It shall be one day Which is known to the Lord Neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen That it will be light.

The kingdom of the Messiah will not have daytime or nighttime. This change in light is a change in the course of nature.

The words “one day” carry the idea of uniqueness. It will be a day like no other. It will be a time of unique natural phenomena (Isa 13:10; 34:4; Joel 2:10, 30-31; 3:15; Mt 24:29).

14:8

And in that day it shall be— That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea; In both summer and winter it shall occur.

“Living waters” are waters that flow rapidly, giving the appearance that they are alive. The ongoing nature of this water will provide fertility in the land. These unabated waters will flow toward the “eastern sea” (the Dead Sea) and the “western sea” (the Mediterranean). These waters will be perennial because they will be available “in both summer and winter.”

14:9

And the Lord shall be King over all the earth [more than just the land of Israel].

The Messiah will be the unrivaled Monarch during the Millennial kingdom. He will be sovereign “over all the earth” (Rev 17:14; 19:16). His kingdom will be universal over the entire world.

In that day it shall be “The Lord is one,” And His name one.

The image of Jehovah as “one” depicts His unity (Deut 6:4). The Messiah will be the only one worshipped in the kingdom. Since God is one, polytheism cannot be true. There are not many gods but only one. Thus, polytheism will come to an end in the kingdom. There will be universal worship of the one true God during the Millennium.

14:10

All the land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem.

Now Zechariah described the topographical changes that will take place in the kingdom. God will turn the entire land into a “plain” running from Geba (north of Jerusalem) to Rimmon (south of Jerusalem).

“Geba” was a Levitical town six miles north of Jerusalem. “Rimmon” was a town located 33 miles southwest of Jerusalem and nine miles north of Beersheba, situated to the south of Israel. God will lower the mountains surrounding Jerusalem into a plain, and Jerusalem will stand out above the adjacent geography.

Jerusalem shall be raised up [elevated] and inhabited in her place from Benjamin’s Gate to the place of the First Gate and the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses.

The Benjamin Gate is probably the Sheep Gate. The “First Gate” located north of the city may be the Fish Gate. The “Corner Gate” may refer to the Valley Gate situated in the southwest corner of Jerusalem. The “Tower of Hananel,” located to the north of Jerusalem, was near the Temple. The “king’s winepress” may be the king’s garden (Neh 3:15) near the Pool of Siloam in the southeastern corner of Jerusalem. The geographical location of Jerusalem will be distinct so that it stands out as special.

14:11

The people shall dwell in it; And no longer shall there be utter destruction [extermination], But Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.

There will be no more war in Jerusalem; it will be secure. Jerusalem means the city of peace, and the Prince of Peace will reign in the city of peace (Isa 9:6). There will be no further attack upon Jerusalem. The restored people of Israel will reside in Jerusalem during the Millennium.

PRINCIPLE:

Christ’s Millennial kingdom will restore the earth to the pristine glory it had before Adam’s fall.

APPLICATION:

The Messiah will actively interpose Himself in human affairs in time on earth. When Christ comes, there will be great topographical changes. The world has been under a curse since Adam’s fall. Jerusalem will have a new King, and the globe with be a new earth. New York, London, and Paris will diminish in importance, for Jerusalem will be the center of the world.
