The essential content of belief is the motivation for ministry, especially the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (2:8-13). Remembering that would give Timothy steadfastness in ministry.
8 Remember that Jesus Christ,
Paul wanted to put Timothy in remembrance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Remember” is an imperative or a command; Christ’s resurrection is at the core of the gospel’s message. There is no option to neglect that message. It is a message a believer must always keep central (present tense).
of the seed [decedent] of David,
Jesus’ ancestry was from the royal lineage of David (Mt 1:1; Ro1:1-3; Rev 22:16). He is the legitimate successor to the throne of David. He had a messianic lineage and was an heir to the Davidic covenant (2 Sa 7). It was not only Jesus but the Messiah who rose from the dead. Christians should consider both His person and mission as the Messiah when considering the resurrection. His resurrection shows His preeminence (Co 1:18; Ro 8:29).
was raised from [out from] the dead according to my gospel,
The Father raised the humanity of Jesus from the dead (Ro 1:1-4; 1 Co 15:13-17). God permanently raised Jesus from the dead (perfect, passive, participle). Jesus did not remain among the dead; God raised Him “out from” among those who died. The resurrected Jesus was with Timothy in whatever he faced, especially in offering the gospel under persecution.
PRINCIPLE:
We need to remember that Jesus Christ is alive.
APPLICATION:
While under pressure in service to the Lord, believers need to remember that Jesus is alive. Memory is the lens through which we view the world. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the ultimate victory over death and the opening of a wonderful future for the saints (1 Co 15:3-4, 17, 19). Rivet your attention on that; remember that. This fact gives hope to those with handicaps, serious illnesses, or other serious problems. Every Christian has a blessed future because of our Lord.
The resurrection of Jesus is the basis for having eternal life. The hope of the resurrection is central to the message of Christianity and its motivation for the Christian sharing the gospel. That message reaches beyond fear and gives boldness to its presentation. Since believers have eternal life because of Jesus’ resurrection, why should fear disable them from serving the Lord?
