21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter,
The “latter” here are those who handle the Word of God with “dishonor.” God will use those who cleanse themselves of dishonorable pastors, especially those who corrupt the Bible for their own ends. Timothy needed to cleanse his church from those who handled the Word poorly, which are dishonorable vessels.
“Cleanses” carries the idea of complete purging. Churches oriented to faithful teaching of God’s Word must make a full break with those who carelessly handle His Word. This break is especially true for those who teach false doctrine (1 Co 5:9-13; 2 Th 3:14). The cleansing here is to purify oneself from falsehoods and the implications that flow from erroneous exposition. This cleansing is an essential requirement for serving the Lord.
he will be a vessel for honor,
A teacher faithful to God’s Word is a “vessel for honor.” God’s perspective on those true to the Word is that they are honorable or noble.
sanctified [set apart]
A faithful expositor of God’s Word is “sanctified” and “useful for the Master.” A faithful expositor sets himself apart for useful service to the Lord (perfect tense). Sanctification is a condition already attained that needs to be maintained.
and useful [serviceable] for the Master,
“Useful” is the same word that occurs in 2 Timothy 4:11, “Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry.” Timothy was to be serviceable “for the Master,” the Lord Jesus Christ. Some are not useful for the Master because they are not true to God’s revelation, the inerrant, infallible Word of God.
prepared for every good [noble] work.
The utensil materials are valuable as they pertain to their intended use. Those who handle the Word of God with careful exposition are noble from God’s viewpoint. They are in a state of having been prepared for every good work (perfect tense). God prepared these vessels for the church to benefit (Eph 2:10).
PRINCIPLE:
God’s ultimate requirement for a church is the faithful exposition of His Word.
APPLICATION:
God will use those who faithfully teach God’s Word to honor His revelation. They are His delight because they are true to His teaching. Others will exist as examples of those contaminated by false doctrine, those who carry dishonor. God views those with a compelling desire to be faithful to truth as “honorable.”
