10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance,
In verses 10-14, Paul warned Timothy that persecution would continue after his demise. The apostle presented himself as an example of how God delivered him even during severe persecution. If a leader is faithful to Scripture, he will face persecution.
10 But you [emphatic] have carefully followed
Paul called attention to Timothy’s faithfulness in following the apostle in several categories. The young pastor was an eyewitness to the persecutions Paul endured.
“Carefully followed” conveys accompanying or conforming to something by conviction. It is to follow in someone’s footsteps. Paul and Timothy were hand-in-hand in their beliefs and lifestyle (1 Co 4:17). Timothy followed Paul’s principles for ministry in verses 10 and 11, beginning with “doctrine” in our verse.
my doctrine [teaching],
“Doctrine” is the content, or instruction, of what Paul taught. This word occurs 14 times in the pastorals (1 Tim 1:10; 4:1, 6, 13, 16; 5:17; 6:1, 3; 2 Tim 3:16; 4:3; Tit 1:9; 2:1, 7, 10). “Doctrine” appears at the beginning of a long list of attributes because of its importance.
Timothy followed Paul’s apostolic teaching (1 Tim 3:16). There would come a day when people would not follow apostolic teaching (2 Tim 4:3). It was important for the young pastor to be faithful to the Word of God.
PRINCIPLE:
Christians need to put meat on their spiritual bones.
APPLICATION:
Believers cannot live the Christian life adequately without functioning under the construct of revelation. We cannot organize or exercise what we believe without doctrinal structure. That structure puts meat on our spiritual bones. Christians are people of the Book. If they put Bible doctrine on their souls, they will not be carried about with every wind of doctrine (Eph 4:14). That is why the pastorals challenge pastors to teach their congregations doctrine (2 Tim 1:13; 1 Tim 4:13, 16). The Bible will mold our lives in a different and dynamic direction than human improvement. It will change our attitudes, such as hostility, vindictiveness, resentment, and recrimination.
