7 Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.” 9 So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?” 10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.” 13 So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
In verses 7-13, Jesus instructs His disciples to prepare for the Passover meal just before His crucifixion.
22:7
Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed.
The “Day” here is Thursday of passion week. On that day Jews celebrated the Passover lamb at twilight (Ex 12:6; Lev 23:5; Num 9:3). A new Jewish day began in the evening when they celebrated the meal, which was Friday. The Passover pointed to Christ’s shed blood and body sacrificed on the cross (Jn 1:29).
22:8
And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
Jesus asked Peter and John to prepare for the Passover meal for the Twelve.
22:9
So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”
Peter and John asked Jesus where they should prepare the Passover meal. Up to this point they had stayed on Mount Olives.
22:10
And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters.
Jesus had prearranged the location for the Passover meal with the owner of the facility. They were to follow a man carrying a pitcher of water to his house. A man carrying a pitcher was unusual since that was a woman’s role.
22:11
Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’
Jesus gives Peter and John specific instructions about what to say to the master of the house where they were to have the Passover meal. They were to engage the “guest room.”
22:12
Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”
The meal was to be in a large, furnished upper room of the house.
22:13
So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
Everything happened just as Jesus said about the facility.
PRINCIPLE:
The New Covenant blesses both Israel and the church.
APPLICATION:
The Passover meal celebrated the New Covenant expressed in Jeremiah 31:31-34. Fulfillment of this covenant was a prerequisite for the coming Kingdom age. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross instituted this covenant. The nation Israel will undergo regeneration in fulfillment of the covenant. The Holy Spirit will indwell believers at its launch. Believers in the Church Age will also participate in the blessings of the New Covenant (1 Co 11:25-26; 2 Co 3:6; Heb 8:6-7).
