Read Introduction to Hebrews

9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”

Verse 9 continues to quote Psalm 45.

Therefore God,

Because the Messiah loved righteousness and hated lawlessness, the Father did something for Him.

Your God,

The Lord is both supreme and subordinate. He both is God and executed the plan of God. He was both Creator and creature incarnate in the flesh. As human, He was Mediator as the God-man.

has anointed You With the oil of gladness

The Father anointed the Messiah with superlative “gladness.” He anointed Jesus in Acts 10:38 (Ps 2:2). The title “Messiah” means the anointed one. The anointing here is not literal but figurative; it is a joy over the Son’s rule. The Father blessed Him in His vindication of divine justice.

The “oil of gladness” may refer to the Lord’s being anointed with the Holy Spirit.

The idea of anointing kings was an ancient practice whereby God established them in their office. Oil was poured on their heads at their coronation (1 Sa 10:1; 16:13; 1 Kgs 1:39).

more than Your companions [peers].

The Messiah had more gladness than His companions or peers because He demonstrated the highest standard of righteousness and hated lawlessness.

PRINCIPLE:

All believers can look forward to a day when justice will rule in the world.

APPLICATION:

The Messiah’s rule characterized by love of justice and hatred of evil shows the quality of His future reign. The Lord Jesus will rule with the eminence of righteousness and justice. All believers can look forward to a day when there is justice in the world.
